Ankle Instability

Ankle Instability

Ankle instability is a medical condition of the ankle. It often results from the recurrent occurrence of ankle sprains. It may occur while walking, standing or doing other activities. Athletes are prone to develop chronic ankle instability. If left untreated, it can lead to activity limitation, consistent instability and arthritis as well.

Physical therapy involving muscle strengthening exercises and medications including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are treatment options for ankle instability. Wearing an ankle brace can help by preventing ankle sprains from occurring. In severe cases of chronic ankle instability, ankle surgery is a reliable alternative.
